Chapter 4 & 5 - Making and Manipulating Selections

Marquee Tool

Using the shortcut 'M', you can access the Marquee Tool,
Rectangular Marquee Tool - Allows to create Rectangles
Elliptical Marquee Tool
Single Row Marquee Tool
Single Coloumn Marquee Tool

Lasso Tools

Polygonal Lasso Tool
Magnetic Lasso Tool
Lasso Tool

Transforming Selections

Scale - CTRL+T then hold SHIFT
Rotate - CTRL+T then placing the mouse to the comer of the selected area, 
Skew/Distort - CTRL+T then hold SHIFT+ALT,
Perspective CTRL+T then SHIFT+ALT+CTRL while dragging

Saving and Loading Selections

To save a selection go to the menu bar and hover over 'Select' then on the drop down menu
'Save Selection'

These selections are saved as Alpha Channels

To load a selection go to the menu bar and hover over 'Select' then on the drop down menu 'Load Selection

Chapter 3 - Painting and Drawing with Colour

Creating Blends

Blends/Gradients are smooth transistions between two or more colours
You can create a gradient from the five options available
You can also choose from one of the presets, This is also the placefor you to store your own favourite gradients


Eraser Tool

The Eraser tool accessible using 'E'.
Their are 3 types of eraser tools available in Photoshop
The normal 'Eraser' tool, can either erase with the background colouror erase all data making the area transparent.
The next eraser is called the 'Background Eraser'It is able to delete the background pixels of a layer
The third eraser is called the 'The Magic Eraser' only erasesthe same colour of the area that was clicked.

Chapter 2 - Viewing and Managing Documents

Different Colour Modes

Colour Mode also known as Colour Space or Colour Model

The Colour that is seen by the human eye is called the Visible Specturm
A gamut is the range of colours that can be produced by a process or device. 

Colour Modes in Photoshop

Photoshop uses a list of Colour Modes :-
  1. RGB Mode aka Red Green Blue(Making Millions of Colours available)
  2. CMYK Mode aka Cyan Magenta Yellow and Black (The 4 Printer Colours)
  3. Index Mode (Allowing for 256 Colours)
  4. Grayscale Mode (Allowing for 256 Greys)
  5. Bitmap Mode (2 Colours - Black or White)

Correcting Mistakes Using History Palette

If the History Palette is not open : Go to the Windows Tab, On the drop down menu Click "History"
Unlike Undo and Redo, The History Palatte lets you go back to an older state of the image and actively compare between two different states, 

Manipulating an On-Screen Image Size


By going to the "Image" tab and clicking "Image Size" you will get the window shown above, This will allow you to change the number of pixels in your document as well as the size of the document,

Chapter 1 - A Quick Tour of Adobe Photoshop

File Formats

  • Photoshop Document (PSD) - The Native Photoshop Format
  • Graphic Interchange Format (GIF) and Joint Picture Expert Group (JPG/JPEG) - Used for Web Graphics
  • Tag Image File Format (TIFF) - Best file format for printing
  • RAW Image -  Large Unprocessed Images taken by DSLR Camera's

File Formats that preserves Photoshop Layers

  • Photoshop Document (PSD) - The Native (default) Photoshop Format
  • PSB (Large Document Format) - Able to store larger Photoshop files (up to 300,000 x 300,000 pixels) 
  • Portable Document Format (PDF) - Captures all the elements of the documents while being smaller in size, Good for digitally sending to other people.
  • Tagged Image File Format (TIFF) - Best Format for Printing

Navigating a Photoshop Image (Zooming In and Zooming Out)

  • Using the Zoom Tool - Press 'Z' to access the Zoom Tool, or click the magnifying glass icon on the toolbar.
  • Type in a magnification value on the bottom left of the screen, 
  • Open the 'View' menu tab, and on the drop-down menu click 'Zoom In' or 'Zoom Out'. As in the menu, The 'Zoom In' and 'Zoom Out' with shortcut 'Ctrl+ +'(Ctrl plus +) or 'Ctrl+ -' (Ctrl plus -).   
  • Another way to navigate in Photoshop is to use the Navigator, To access the Navigator, 

What is a Pixel ?

A pixel (picture x element) is the smallest addressable element in a display device, The smallest contrallable element of a picture represented on a screen. Each pixel is made up of Sub-Pixel each controlling the intensity of a colour, The image below shows the RGB sub pixel format.
